Dansville 5K Boasts Record Numbers amid Hometown Charm

I may be bias. And I might catch some flack. But my very first Dansville 5K experience, Saturday July 29 drenched in sunshine under clear blue skies with temperatures in the sixties, shaped up to be one of my all time favorite races. And those who know me well know that I run a lot of races.

A fundraiser for the Dansville High and Dansville Middle School and club running programs, this Ann Arbor Track Club sponsored race is as authentic as they come.

Race directors and AATC members, JD and Chere Pepper, also the respective Dansville High School head and assistant coaches, welcomed the crowd to their small, hometown race with country tunes and smiles galore.

JD led the field on bike as sixty-six runners gave chase, a certified 5K out and back route on Dansville’s quaint, rural country roads with just enough hills to challenge one and all.

David Spinner, 18:46, and Saraphine Spalding, 24:00, claimed top honors while Michael Hammond, 19:07, and Tracey Cohen, 24:56, ran top for masters; Jamie Hartges, 19:57, and Judith Tuthill, 34:14, earned Grand Masters honors.

But that is only the beginning of the morning’s many highlights.

Six year old Makayla Williamson ran the half mile Aggies Kid’s Run, her first race ever, with her dad, Mike, and nine year old sister, Aubrey.

Proudly showcasing their finisher medals, Makayla and Aubrey, handed out water to tired, triumphant 5K finishers,

while Mike went on to run a 5K personal record, and Kim, wife and mother, ran her second ever 5K competition.

Never quite as complete without running legend, Harrison Hensley, this tough, old, soon to be eighty-five year old competitor won the eighty and up age division in a phenomenal time of 48:43.

Handmade sandwiches and live results courtesy of Michigan Running Foundation made for the perfect end to a flawless morning.

Previously a June race, co-director Chere confirmed that the new July date is here to stay with or without previous years’ duathlon which had to be abandoned this year due to mitigating factors.
